Description

Having been fascinated for decades with galaxies, I would never have dreamt of being able to image them from my light polluted skies here in the Midwest. After a little digging, I ran across the Astronomik ProPlanet 642  BP IR Infrared Pass filter, which was totally unknown to me. This filter has been used by others in very light polluted skies with great success, so I had to get one to see what it could do.  My first try with this filter was a couple of weeks ago on NGC2336 and IC467, two fairly small galaxies in our northern sky taken with my 12.5” f4. I can't emphasize enough how surprised I am of what it can do. The images were 600 seconds and I only had 7 subs for a total of 1 hr. and 10 min., with a 69% moon visible, showing no indication of saturation of the subs. I could have easily gone to 1200 seconds. Now, granted, this image is in mono but I never minded B+W and it is really my first attempt to image galaxies with this filter. RGB might be possible but if I can only get mono images like this, I'll still be very happy. Thanks to Astronomik for such a great product, it's very exciting and I'm looking forward to using it extensively. Now they just need to work on that cloud filter!
